Tunkinsky National Park

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Tunkinsky National Park is a vast protected area in south central Siberia. It encompasses the entire Tunkinsky District within the Republic of Buryatia. The park is defined by the Tunka Valley, which follows the path of the Irkut River. This valley serves as a geographic bridge. It connects the rift valley of Lake Baikal to the border of Mongolia. The park sits in a unique position between two major Siberian lakes. These are Lake Baikal and Lake Khövsgöl.

The topography of the park is incredibly diverse and dramatic. To the north and west, the eastern edge of the Sayan Mountains rises up. To the east, the lower Khamar-Daban mountains provide a different landscape. The park features various landforms like rift valleys and glacial valleys. Visitors can find mountain meadows, waterfalls, and hot springs. The central Irkut River valley is quite different from the mountains. It is flat and contains fertile soil. This soil is well suited for agriculture. The high peaks, sometimes called the Tunka Alps, are located about 200 km southwest of Irkutsk.

The climate in this region is classified as a subarctic snow climate. This is known by the Koeppen Classification code Dwc. This specific climate means the area experiences cold winters and cool summers. The winters are characterized by dry conditions. The park receives about 595 mm of precipitation every year. Most of this moisture arrives during the summer months. This cycle of weather helps shape the many different ecosystems found here. The park acts as a meeting point for several distinct biological zones. These include taiga, steppe, alpine forest, and lake ecosystems.

Because it is an isolated and bio-diverse area, many species thrive here. Researchers have identified more than 305 different vertebrates. Within this group, 62 species are characterized as rare or endangered. Some of these animals live at the very edge of their natural range. For example, the snow leopard is found at the northern edge of its range. The Asiatic wild dog, also called the dhole or Cuon alpinus, is also found there. The park is home to 54 species of mammals. These include the wolverine, elk, Siberian roe deer, and the steppe polecat.

The park also supports a massive variety of other life forms. There are 18 species of fish recorded in the waters. These include fish like carp, grayling, dace, and roach. The bird population is quite large as well. There are 207 nesting species of birds and 30 transitory species. The park also contains 4 species of amphibians and 5 species of reptiles. The plant life is just as complex. Over 900 vascular plants have been recorded in the park. This high number of species shows how healthy the different habitats are.

Plant life changes significantly based on the elevation of the land. The mid-elevation mountains contain Sayan montane conifer forests. These are part of the Temperate Conifer Forest biome. People often refer to these as taiga forests. They are transitional zones that mix species from the Siberian Taiga and the Mongolian Steppe. You can find trees such as larch, cedar, and pine in these woods. The lower regions of the park feature forest-steppe vegetation. At the highest elevations, the environment shifts again. Here, you will find tundra and alpine glades. However, many plants are at risk. There are 43 endemic species listed in the Russian Red Book as endangered.

Human activity and tourism are also part of the park's story. The indigenous Siberian Buryat people live in small settlements throughout the valley. The town of Arshan is a notable location for visitors. It is a small spa resort town at the base of the Sayan Mountains. Arshan is famous for its carbonate mineral springs. The town has developed infrastructure to support people. This includes cafes, baths, and hotels. The landscape attracts many people who enjoy outdoor sports. Common activities include mountaineering, rock climbing, kayaking, and backpacking.
