It sits in a large valley. This is the Irkut River valley. The park is near two big lakes. These are Lake Baikal and Lake Khövsgöl. High mountains are all around the valley. The Sayan Mountains are to the north and west. The Khamar-Daban mountains are to the east.

The land has many beautiful sights. You can see waterfalls and hot springs. There are green meadows and tall mountains. The central valley has flat land with good soil. Many people live there. Most are the indigenous Siberian Buryat people.

Many animals live in the park. There are over 305 types of animals with backbones. Some are very rare. You might find a snow leopard here. You might also see an Asiatic wild dog. There are many birds and fish, too.

The park has many kinds of plants. Some trees are pine, cedar, and larch. These grow in the taiga, or thick forest. The higher areas have tundra. Tundra is a cold, treeless land. People visit the town of Arshan. They stay in hotels and visit mineral springs.
