The region is home to Lake Baikal. This lake is the oldest and deepest in the whole world. It holds over one-fifth of all the fresh liquid water on Earth's surface. The Angara River flows out of the lake and moves north. Large dams at Irkutsk, Bratsk, and Ust-Ilimsk help control the water.

The land is mostly made of hills and wide valleys. You can find the Baikal Mountains along the edge of the lake. In the northeast, the North Baikal Highlands and Patom Plateau rise up. The highest point in the whole region is called Pik Tofalariya.

The weather here changes quite a bit depending on where you stand. In the south, summers are warm and continental. In the north, the weather is much colder and more subarctic. For almost half the year, temperatures stay below freezing. This lasts from mid-October until the start of April. Winters are very cold and can be quite harsh. In January, the average low temperature in Irkutsk is -24°C. Summers are warm but they do not last very long. July is usually the warmest month with an average high of 20°C. Most of the rain falls during these summer months. July is the wettest month, while January is the driest.

This region has a very long and busy history. Many different groups lived here a long time ago. This included the Xiongnu Empire and the Mongol Empire. In the 17th century, Russian presence began to grow in the area. By the end of that century, Irkutsk was a small town. People began building monasteries and small farms nearby. During the 18th century, the city grew into a major trade center. It helped connect places like China and Mongolia to other parts of Russia. Merchants even used Irkutsk to start companies in Alaska.

Many schools and science museums also opened during this time.

In the 1800s, Irkutsk became a very important place for gold. Merchants found gold in the nearby regions and became very wealthy. This wealth helped build many new hospitals, schools, and homes. The city changed its look with many beautiful buildings. In 1898, a huge change happened when the Trans-Siberian Railway arrived.

This train line helped the city grow even faster. However, the city also faced hard times, like a big fire in 1879. That fire destroyed much of the central part of the city. Even so, the people rebuilt it with new stone and wooden buildings.

Today, Irkutsk Oblast is a place of science and industry. The city of Irkutsk is the main center for the region. It has many large factories for making things like metal and food.
