This location makes Barnaul a vital hub for culture, medicine, and education. It is also a central point for transport in the Siberian Federal District. The city is situated in a forest steppe zone. This area is near the Altai Mountains and close to the borders of Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China.

The geography of Barnaul is shaped by its river system. The confluence of the Barnaulka and Ob rivers provided a perfect spot for early inhabitants. Modern humans, Neanderthals, and Denisovans lived in this area for hundreds of thousands of years. They used the rivers for fishing and for easy transportation. Later, Scythian and various Turkic peoples made this area a centre of activity. The rivers continue to define the landscape and the city's layout today.

Barnaul's official history began with the wealthy Demidov family around 1730.

They chose this site because of its proximity to mineral-rich mountains. The family intended to develop copper production in the Altai Mountains. However, they soon discovered substantial deposits of silver as well. Barnaul eventually became a massive centre for silver production within the Russian Empire. In 1747, the Crown took over the Demidov factories. The settlement was officially granted city status in 1771.

The city has experienced significant historical shifts and challenges. In 1914, Barnaul was the site of Russia's largest conscription riot during World War I. This event resulted in more than 100 casualties. Following the Russian Revolution, the city saw street fighting between the Whites and the Reds in 1918. These conflicts forced many people to become refugees. One notable person from this era was Mary Zudilova. She fled to China and later immigrated to the United States. She became the mother of famous American actresses Natalie and Lana Wood.

Barnaul is a powerhouse of industry in Western Siberia. The city contains more than 100 industrial enterprises. These companies employ approximately 120,000 people. Many businesses focus on diesel and carbon processing. Other major industries include the production of heavy machinery, tyres, furniture, and footwear. The Barnaul Cartridge Plant is a very important facility. It is a major manufacturer of small-arms ammunition. During World War II, Barnaul's factories were essential to the Soviet Union. It is estimated that the city manufactured over half of the light ammunition used during the war.

Demographics and climate also define the experience of living in Barnaul. As of the 2021 census, the population was 630,877 people. This makes it the 20th-largest city in Russia.
