This location is part of the Kuznetsk Basin. This basin is a vital coal mining region. Kemerovo is a central hub for heavy industry in this part of the country. It manages both regional and district administrative duties.

The city's development is tied to the natural resources found underground. Coal was first discovered in this area in 1721. This discovery eventually led to the establishment of the first coal mines in 1907. A chemical plant followed in 1916. The growth of the settlement was accelerated by new railway connections. One line ran between Yurga and Kolchugino. Another connection linked Topki to Shcheglovo. These tracks allowed for the movement of resources and people.

Kemerovo grew from several older Russian settlements. A waypoint called Verkhotomsky ostrog was built nearby in 1657. In 1701, a settlement named Shcheglovsk was founded on the left bank of the Tom River. By 1859, seven different villages existed in the area. These included Shcheglovka, Kemerovo, Yevseyevo, Krasny Yar, Kur-Iskitim, Davydovo, and Borovaya. Shcheglovo received town status on 9 May 1918. This date is now recognized as the official founding of the city. The town was later renamed Kemerovo on 27 May 1932.

The city's economy is built on coal mining and heavy industry. It hosts plants for steel, aluminum, and machinery. There are also industries for chemicals and fertilizers. Since the disintegration of the Soviet Union, these industries have faced a severe decline. This shift has resulted in high levels of unemployment. Despite these challenges, the city remains a significant industrial center. It is home to major companies like the Siberian Business Union.

Kemerovo has a complex system of public transportation. The network includes 70 city bus routes and 63 suburban routes. There are also 53 public taxi routes. Electric transport is a major part of the system, with 5 trams and 9 trolleybuses. Every day, 686 transport units enter the city streets. This includes 201 buses and 364 route taxis. The Kemerovo International Airport serves the city to the southeast. It is named after the cosmonaut Alexei Leonov.
