This area is part of the Kuznetsk Basin. This region is very important because of its huge coal mining industry. The city serves as a main center for the local government. It is a busy place where many different industries work together.

The city grew because of the coal found deep underground. People first discovered coal in this area in 1721. Later, the first real coal mines were built in 1907. A chemical plant was also added in 1916. Building a railway helped the area grow even more. This train line connected places like Yurga and Kolchugino. These connections made it easier to move goods and people around.

Kemerovo has a long and interesting history. It grew from several older Russian settlements. One small waypoint was built nearby in 1657. A settlement called Shcheglovsk was founded in 1701. By 1859, there were seven different villages in this area. The town of Shcheglovsk was officially named a town in 1918. This date is now seen as the founding of Kemerovo. The city was eventually renamed Kemerovo in 1932.

There are many facts that make the city unique. The city has 70 different bus routes for people to use. It also has five tram lines and nine trolleybus lines.
