The name might come from the Kur River. It could also come from a word meaning "bent" or "curved." The city was first recorded in the year 1032. Long ago, it was part of a place called Kievan Rus'. It has been an important center for many centuries.

In the past, Kursk was built as a strong fortress. It sat on a hill that looked over the flat land. This high spot helped people see what was coming. The city was surrounded by rivers on three sides.

Forest thickets grew to the north of the settlement. Because of its location, it was a key spot for soldiers. It sat on a short path between Moscow and the Crimea. This made it a great place for trade and travel.

Many different groups have ruled Kursk over time. In the 13th century, it was a small principality. Later, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania ruled the area. By 1508, it joined the Russian state. The city faced many attacks from different groups. In 1616, there were 1,600 soldiers in the city garrison. Even during many wars, the Kursk fortress was never taken.

In 1782, leaders made a new plan for the city. Before this, most houses were made of wood. The streets were often very narrow, only 2.5 to 3 metres wide.

The new plan used a grid of straight streets. It created two main parts called Nagornaya and Zakurnaya. The streets met at a central spot called Red Square. This plan helped the government keep track of the people living there. Many stone buildings were built during this time.

Kursk has seen many big events in its history. During World War II, it was the site of a huge battle.
