It sits within the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and is part of a larger metropolitan region. The city is built where two rivers meet: the Saksahan and the Inhulets.

Its name comes from the Ukrainian words for "crooked horn" or "curved cape." This name likely describes the shape of the land near the rivers. Some local legends say a "crooked" Cossack named Rih founded the first village. The city is very large in size. It is the second largest city in Ukraine by area.

Industry is the heart of this city's story. In the 1880s, people found huge amounts of iron ore in the area. This area of ore is called Kryvbas.

To get the ore out, investors from Belgium, France, and Britain helped build mines. A man named Alexander Pol was key to finding these deposits. By 1886, the first underground mine was working.

Later, a massive railway linked the ore to coal mines in Donbas. This allowed the city to grow into a powerful industrial center.

History shows that Kryvyi Rih has changed many times. It began as a military post in 1775.

During the Soviet era, the city grew even faster. In 1934, they built Kryvorizhstal, a huge steel works. It was the largest of its kind in the Soviet Union.

However, the city also faced very hard times. During the Great Famine of 1932–33, many people suffered. The city also changed hands many times during the Russian Civil War.

World War II brought great destruction to the city. German forces occupied Kryvyi Rih from 1941 to 1944.

The city was also a place for prisoner-of-war camps. When the war ended, the city was in ruins. People had to live in temporary barracks while they rebuilt.

By 1950, they had restored the iron ore production. The city even built a tall, 185-meter steel TV mast in the 1960s.

Today, Kryvyi Rih is the seventh largest city in Ukraine by population. It has faced new challenges in recent years. In 2017, there were many strikes by workers.
