It sits right on the banks of the big Dnieper River. This river actually splits the city into two separate parts.

Sitting right in the middle of the river is Khortytsia Island. This island is a large national park with a very special environment. The dry air from the steppe meets the fresh water of the river. This helps clean the air and allows many different plants to grow.

Visitors can enjoy the sandy beaches or walk along the hiking routes. The island also has many historical monuments and deep ravines to explore.

The city is a very important place for making heavy goods. It is a major industrial center for the whole region. Factories here produce things like steel and aluminium. They also make aircraft engines, automobiles, and large transformers.

To help power all this work, the area has several power stations. One famous site is the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station.

In the 1930s, an American company even built a special mill to make steel strips. This helped the city grow into the industrial hub it is today.

Zaporizhzhia has a long and changing history. It was founded in 1770 with the building of a fortress. This fortress was part of a line meant to protect southern lands.

For a long time, the city was called Aleksandrovsk. The name Zaporizhzhia actually means "beyond the rapids." This refers to the city's position downstream from the Dnieper Rapids. These rapids used to make traveling by boat very difficult. In 1932, the rapids were flooded to create a large reservoir.

This changed the landscape of the river forever.

The city has seen many difficult times during wars. During World War I, a factory moved its aircraft engine plant here in 1916.

Later, during World War II, the city faced much harder struggles. In 1941, German forces reached the outskirts and took the island.

A dam was blown up, which caused a massive flood. The city was eventually reclaimed by the Red Army in October 1943. More recently, the city has faced attacks during the 2022 Russian invasion.

These events have impacted the lives of the people living there.

Today, Zaporizhzhia is divided into seven different urban districts.

Other groups include Russians, Belarusians, and Bulgarians. The city uses the Ukrainian language for official government business. While the population has changed over the years, it remains a central part of the region. It connects the history of the old river rapids to modern industrial life.
