It sits right on the banks of the big Dnieper River. This river actually splits the city into two separate parts. Sitting right in the middle of the river is Khortytsia Island. This island is a large national park with a very special environment. The dry air from the steppe meets the fresh water of the river. This helps clean the air and allows many different plants to grow. Visitors can enjoy the sandy beaches or walk along the hiking routes. The island also has many historical monuments and deep ravines to explore.

The city is a very important place for making heavy goods. It is a major industrial center for the whole region. Factories here produce things like steel and aluminium. They also make aircraft engines, automobiles, and large transformers. To help power all this work, the area has several power stations. One famous site is the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station.

In the 1930s, an American company even built a special mill to make steel strips. This helped the city grow into the industrial hub it is today.

Zaporizhzhia has a long and changing history. It was founded in 1770 with the building of a fortress. This fortress was part of a line meant to protect southern lands.

For a long time, the city was called Aleksandrovsk. The name Zaporizhzhia actually means "beyond the rapids." This refers to the city's position downstream from the Dnieper Rapids. These rapids used to make traveling by boat very difficult. In 1932, the rapids were flooded to create a large reservoir.

This changed the landscape of the river forever.

The city has seen many difficult times during wars. During World War I, a factory moved its aircraft engine plant here in 1916.

Later, during World War II, the city faced much harder struggles. In 1941, German forces reached the outskirts and took the island. A dam was blown up, which caused a massive flood. The city was eventually reclaimed by the Red Army in October 1943. More recently, the city has faced attacks during the 2022 Russian invasion.

The city sits on the banks of the Dnieper River. This large river actually splits the city into two distinct parts. Between these two sections lies Khortytsia Island. This island is a significant national park within the region. It features a unique environment where dry steppe air meets a large freshwater basin. This combination helps clean the air and supports diverse plant life. The island's landscape is defined by large ravines, hiking routes, and historical monuments. Visitors often use the island for recreation, enjoying its sandy beaches and health centers.

The name Zaporizhzhia is deeply connected to the local geography. It means "beyond the rapids." This refers to the city's location downstream or south of the Dnieper Rapids. In the past, these rapids were a major impediment to navigation. They were also important sites for portages, where boats were moved over land. This landscape changed significantly in 1932. During that year, the rapids were flooded to become part of the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station reservoir.

This event transformed the river's flow and the surrounding area's appearance.

Zaporizhzhia's history began with military defense. The city was founded in 1770. At that time, the Aleksandrovskaya Fortress was built. This fortress was part of the Dnieper Defence Line of the Russian Empire. Its purpose was to protect southern territories from Crimean Tatar invasions. Before 1921, the city was known as Aleksandrovsk or Oleksandrivsk. Following the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca in 1775, the southern East European Plain was absorbed into the Russian Empire. This caused the fortress to lose its military significance. It eventually became a small rural town known as Alexandrovsk for many decades.

Industrial growth changed the city's character during the 20th century. The opening of the Kichkas Bridge provided the first rail crossing of the Dnieper. This connection sparked significant industrial expansion. In 1916, the DEKA Stock Association moved its aircraft engine manufacturing plant to the city.

During the 1920s and 1930s, the Soviet government increased industrialization further. They built the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station and the Zaporizhzhia Steel Plant. They also constructed the Dnieper Aluminium Plant. In the 1930s, the American United Engineering and Foundry Company built a specialized strip mill. This mill was similar to the Ford River Rouge steel mill. It was designed to produce rolling steel strip.

The city has experienced intense conflict during major wars. During the Russian Civil War, Zaporizhzhia saw fierce fighting between several different armies. The Kichkas Bridge was a strategic site used to move troops and supplies. During World War II, the situation became even more dangerous. In August 1941, German forces seized the island of Khortytsia. On that same day, the Red Army blew a hole in the Dnieper hydroelectric dam. This created a massive flood wave reaching toward Nikopol. Historians estimate the death toll from this flood was between 20,000 and 100,000 people.

The German occupation lasted two years and involved significant violence and forced labor. The city was eventually reclaimed by the Red Army in October 1943.

Modern Zaporizhzhia is organized into seven urban districts.

The Shevchenkivskyi district is the largest, containing 20 percent of the total population. Other districts include Kosmichnyi and Dniprovskyi, which each hold about 17 percent of the residents. The city's population has seen a decline since Ukraine gained independence. In January 2017, the population was recorded at 750,685 people. The city is home to a diverse population. According to the 2001 census, 70.28 percent of residents were Ukrainian. About 25.39 percent were Russians. Other ethnic groups include Belarusians, Bulgarians, and Jews.

Today, Zaporizhzhia remains a vital industrial hub. It produces heavy goods like steel, aluminium, and automobiles. The region also manufactures aircraft engines and large transformers for substations. However, the city continues to face challenges. Since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the city has faced ongoing attacks. Russian forces have used missiles and rockets against the city and its residential buildings.
