Before 2022, it was a very large and important place. It was the tenth-largest city in Ukraine. By January 2022, about 425,681 people lived there. Today, the population is much smaller. Ukrainian authorities estimate there are about 120,000 people left in August 2023.

The area has a very deep history. Very long ago, people lived on the shores of the Sea of Azov. Archaeologists found many old items there from the end of the third millennium BCE.

Later, the land was part of the "Wild Fields." This was a large, empty area of steppe. For a long time, it was a place of conflict. Different groups like the Crimean Tatars and the Nogay Horde lived or fought there. The Zaporozhian Cossacks also used the land for fishing and farming. They were free people who lived in small, mobile groups.

Modern Mariupol began to take shape in the late 1700s. The city was officially founded on September 29, 1779.

By the mid-1800s, the city was growing quickly. It had many shops and wine cellars. It even had offices for leaders from many different countries like France and Italy.

As time passed, Mariupol became a huge center for industry. It was a very important place for making metal.
