The modern city was founded much later in June 1783. It was first called Akhtiar, which means "White Cliff." Later, Catherine the Great ordered a fortress to be built there. She gave the city the name Sevastopol.

Sevastopol has faced many difficult times during wars. During the Crimean War from 1853 to 1856, the city was a main site of fighting. It was under a long siege for eleven months. Later, during World War II, the city faced very heavy bombing. German forces used huge railway guns to attack the city's forts. After the fighting ended in 1944, the city was given the title "Hero City."
