It sits along the coast of the Black Sea. The city is known for its deep, navigable harbours. These maritime features have made it a vital naval base for centuries. It serves as a central hub for the Black Sea Fleet. The city's geography provides a strong foundation for its local economy.

The city's name has deep roots in the Greek language. Sevastopol is a compound of the Greek words *sebastós* and *pólis*. The word *sebastós* means "venerable." The word *pólis* means "city." This name is the Greek equivalent of the Roman title Augustus. It was often used for the first Roman emperor and his successors. The name was likely chosen to reflect the ancient Greek history of the region. It may also honor Empress Catherine II of the Russian Empire. She founded the city in 1783 and visited it in 1787.

Long before the modern city existed, a Greek colony lived in this area. This ancient settlement was called Chersonesus. It was established in the 6th century BC by settlers from Heraclea Pontica. Chersonesus functioned as an independent democracy for many years. Later, it became part of the Bosporan Kingdom. The colony lasted for nearly two thousand years. Eventually, the Golden Horde sacked the city several times in the 13th and 14th centuries. The site was finally abandoned. Today, the ruins of the ancient Greek theatre remain a popular tourist attraction.

The modern history of Sevastopol began in June 1783. A Scottish native in Russian service named Thomas MacKenzie founded it. He originally named the naval base Akhtiar, which means "White Cliff." In 1784, Catherine the Great ordered Grigory Potyomkin to build a fortress there. He gave the settlement the name Sevastopol. Captain Fyodor Ushakov later became the commander of the port in 1788. The city was built on the western shore of Southern Bay. This bay branches away from the larger Sevastopol Bay. The name Akhtiar was used again in 1797 by an edict from Emperor Paul I. However, the Senate officially returned the name Sevastopol in 1826.

Sevastopol has been a central site in several major conflicts. During the Crimean War from 1853 to 1856, the city was a primary target. Allied forces landed on the peninsula in September 1854. They marched south toward the city after the Battle of the Alma. This led to an eleven-month siege of Sevastopol. The war ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1856. Later, during World War II, the city faced intense German bombardment. From 1941 to 1942, German forces used massive railway artillery. This included the Schwerer Gustav, the largest calibre railway gun ever used in battle. The city fell to Axis forces in July 1942 after 250 days of fighting. The Red Army liberated the city on 9 May 1944.

The city's political status has been a subject of international tension. During the Soviet era, Sevastopol was a "closed city." This meant non-residents needed special permits to visit. In 1954, the territory was transferred to the Ukrainian SSR. After the USSR dissolved in 1991, Sevastopol became a base for the Ukrainian navy. This caused friction between Russia and Ukraine regarding the Black Sea Fleet. In 2014, Russia occupied the city. Russia then annexed Crimea and made Sevastopol a federal city. Internationally, Sevastopol is still recognised as part of Ukraine. Under Ukrainian law, it holds a special administrative status similar to Kyiv.

Today, Sevastopol is a diverse and active urban centre. The total population is 547,820 people. The urban population living near Sevastopol Bay is 479,394. The population includes an ethnic Russian majority. There are also significant minorities of Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars.
