The city is growing very fast. In 2021, more than 547,000 people lived there. This makes it one of the fastest growing cities in the whole country.

The name Stavropol comes from a Greek name. It means "City of the Cross." A legend says soldiers found a stone cross while building a fort. The city began on October 22, 1777, after a war. Prince Grigory Potemkin helped start it as one of ten fortresses. Later, Alexander I invited Armenian families to live there to help with trade. The city became a very important place for business in the North Caucasus.

Many things have happened in the city's history. During the Russian Civil War, different groups fought to control it. In 1935, the city was even given a new name, Voroshilovsk. It kept that name until 1943 when the old name came back. During World War II, German forces occupied the city for a few months. The Soviet Army eventually liberated the city in January 1943. Since 1946, people have also found natural gas near the city.

Today, many people work in different jobs in Stavropol. They make cars, furniture, and tools for building things. The city stays connected to other places by trains, highways, and planes. Travelers use the Shpakovskoye airport to fly in and out.

There are also big places for fun and learning. You can visit Victory Park, which is a huge park covering 200 hectares. There is also a botanical garden with 16 hectares of natural woods.

Stavropol is a place where many famous people have been. The leader Mikhail Gorbachev was born in this region. Many great poets and writers like Leo Tolstoy visited the city too. The weather here can change quite a lot. Summers are hot, but winters can be very cold. This happens because the mountains do not block the winter winds. It is a place with a very long and interesting story.
