Before the year 819, Slavic people lived in a settlement called Liubice. This name likely means "how lovely." In 1143, Adolf II founded the modern town on the river island of Bucu. By the middle of the 12th century, Lübeck became the center of the Hanseatic League. This was a huge group of trading cities. Lübeck was its most important city and its capital. In 1375, Emperor Charles IV even called it one of the "Glories of the Empire." This was a high honor shared with cities like Rome and Venice.

Life in Lübeck has changed many times over the years. The city was an independent free city for a long time. It kept this status from 1226 until 1937. During World War II, the city faced very hard times. In 1942, a large bombing raid caused a firestorm. This destroyed many houses and three of the main churches.
