In the 13th century, it joined the Hanseatic League. This was a group of cities that traded across Northern Europe. For much of its 1,200-year history, Bremen was an independent city. It had its own rules within the Holy Roman Empire. Even during wars, the city kept a strong identity.

There are many famous things to see in Bremen today. The city has many museums and art galleries. You can visit the Bremen Overseas Museum or the Weserburg.
