This port helps move goods across Europe and the globe. It connects to big motorways and many rail networks. The port even links to freight trains coming from China. Today, the city is a hub for steel and chemical industries. It is also a place where many people work in logistics.

Duisburg has a very long history that goes back many centuries. People lived in the area during Roman and Frankish times. The first written mention of the city was in the year 883. During the Middle Ages, it was a busy trading town. It was even a member of the Hanseatic League. You can still see the remains of the old city wall today.

Many important facts define the city today. Duisburg has about 500,000 inhabitants. This makes it the 15th-largest city in Germany. The University of Duisburg-Essen is one of the largest universities in the country. It has about 42,747 students. The city is also known for its steel production. In the year 2000, it produced nearly half of all hot metal in Germany.

Modern Duisburg is changing as it grows. It is moving from heavy industry to new types of work. This includes research, services, and logistics. The city has many cultural places like theaters and museums. Some old industrial sites are now used for tourism. For example, the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord is a famous landmark. Even after hard times like World War II, the city has rebuilt itself.
