Long ago, the Pechenegs had to move west. This happened because of wars in the steppes. They fought with the Oghuz Turks. The Oghuz won a battle near the Aral Sea. After that, many Pechenegs moved toward the Volga River. Their new lands were very large.

The Pechenegs lived near many different groups. They lived near the Khazars and the Slavs. They often fought with their neighbors. They also made raids into the lands of the Rus'.
