The region is split into two main sections. The West Loop is located in Ningxia. This part includes the Yinchuan Plain near Shizuishan, Yinchuan, and Wuzhong. It also contains the Weining Plain near Zhongwei. The East Loop is found in Inner Mongolia. This side has two smaller parts. The western part is called the Back Loop. The East Loop also has a Front Loop. This eastern section includes the Tumochuan Plain. You can find this plain near Baotou and Hohhot. The land here is very different from the nearby areas. History shows that Hetao was a very important place. Many Eurasian nomads used these plains as a staging area. They would move from here to raid the Central Plain or the south. This happened in the south toward the Guanzhong Region. Because of this, the land was key for defense. It was very important during the Han and Tang dynasties. Leaders used this region to protect against invaders from the north.
The Hetao region is a unique collection of flood plains in northwestern China.
Several major landforms define the boundaries of the Hetao region. To the west, the Helan Mountains mark the edge. The Yin Mountains sit directly to the north of the plains. On the eastern side, the northern portion of the Lüliang Mountains provides a border. To the south, the landscape changes into the Ordos Desert and the Loess Plateau. The Ming Great Wall serves as a divider between the region and the plateau. These mountains and deserts surround the river's fertile flood plains.
Geographically, the region is divided into two primary sections. The first is the West Loop, which is located in Ningxia. This section contains two important areas: the Yinchuan Plain and the Weining Plain. The Yinchuan Plain, also called the Ningxia Plain, surrounds Shizuishan, Yinchuan, and Wuzhong. The Weining Plain is located around the city of Zhongwei. These plains are part of the alluvial landscape created by the river.
The second primary section is the East Loop, located in Inner Mongolia. This section is further split into two distinct parts. The western part is known as the Back Loop. It includes the Bayannur Plain, which sits around Bayannur and Wuhai. The eastern part is called the Front Loop. This area contains the Tumochuan Plain. You can find this plain near the cities of Baotou and Hohhot.
The environment of Hetao is quite different from its neighbors. Most of the surrounding area consists of arid desert or steppe. This means the land is very dry with little water. However, the Hetao plains are fertile grasslands. This fertility makes the area suitable for both pastoral and agricultural activities. People can raise livestock or grow crops here more easily than elsewhere. The river provides the moisture needed for these productive grasslands.
Because of its location, Hetao has played a major role in history. Various Eurasian nomads used these plains as a staging area. They used the fertile land to prepare for movements into other regions. From Hetao, they could raid east into the Central Plain. They could also move south into the Loess Plateau and the Guanzhong Region. The plains acted as a base for these large-scale movements.
This strategic position made Hetao essential for defense throughout Chinese history. It was a key area for protecting the country against northern invaders. This importance was especially notable during the Han and Tang dynasties. Controlling this C-shaped region helped manage the movement of people and armies. The geography of the river and the surrounding mountains shaped how leaders defended the territory.
