Sediment is just bits of rock and dirt that settle in new places. Rivers can create alluvial plains by leaving soil behind. Glaciers can also make plains as they move. An alluvial plain is a broader term that includes current flood plains and areas that used to flood in the past.

Glacial plains are also common. An outwash plain, or sandur, is formed by melt-water depositing layered gravel and sand at the end of a glacier. Till plains are different because they consist of unsorted material called till. This material is left behind when a sheet of ice melts in place.

In areas where rivers have deposited sediment, the soil is often deep and fertile. The flat terrain also facilitates mechanization, which means it is easy to use large machinery for growing crops.
