The Great Flood of China is a famous story from ancient times.

It describes a time when water covered huge areas of land. This flood lasted for at least two generations of people. It brought many hard times like storms and famine. People had to leave their homes to find safety. Some moved to high mountains or even lived in trees.

This story is a very important part of Chinese culture. It helps people understand how early dynasties began. It is also a major theme in old Chinese poetry.

In the stories, the flood happened during the reign of Emperor Yao. The water filled the Yellow River and the Yangtze valleys. Yao wanted to find someone to stop the rising water. He asked his advisers, known as the Four Mountains, for help. They suggested a man named Gun to lead the work. Gun was a distant relative of the Emperor. He tried to stop the water by building dams and dikes.

He used a magical soil called Xirang to build these barriers. However, Gun's plan did not work and the water kept rising.

After Gun failed, a leader named Shun took over the work. Shun was also a relative of Emperor Yao. To prepare for the flood, Shun did many organized tasks. He changed the calendar so everyone could follow the same timing. He traveled to sacred mountains like Mount Tai to meet leaders. Shun also made sure everyone used the same weights and measures. This helped people work together on big engineering jobs.

He divided the land into twelve units called zhou. These units helped people manage the flooded areas more easily.

Some people believe this story comes from a real event. Scientists found evidence of a huge flood at Jishi Gorge. This happened on the Yellow River a long time ago. They date this event to about 1920 BCE. This is a few centuries after the traditional time of Emperor Yao. The real flood might have inspired the famous myth. It shows how a natural disaster can change a whole culture.

Gun had a son named Yu who tried a new way.

Yu did not try to block the water with dams. Instead, he focused on drainage to let the water flow away. He dug canals and channels to guide the rivers. Some stories say he had help from a dragon and a giant turtle. He may have even used a map from a river god. Yu's success in controlling the waters made him a hero in history. His work helped people manage land and farming much better.
