Long ago, huge floods often hit the Chinese heartland. These floods made it hard for people to grow food or live safely. Yu's father, a man named Gun, tried to stop the water first. Gun spent nine years building many dams and dikes. He even used a special kind of soil that expanded. However, these efforts did not work to stop the flooding.

Yu decided to finish his father's work in a new way. He studied the rivers very carefully to understand them. He worked with a farming master named Hou Ji. Instead of just blocking the water, Yu dug irrigation canals. These canals moved the flood water into farm fields. He also spent thirteen years dredging the silty riverbeds.
