Dan was a very important leader in early China. He is most often called the Duke of Zhou. He belonged to the royal family of the Zhou dynasty. His father was King Wen and his mother was Queen Tai Si. His older brother was King Wu, who won a big battle called the Battle of Muye around 1046 BC.

After King Wu died, his son King Cheng was too young to rule. Dan stepped in to help as a regent. A regent is a person who leads a kingdom for someone else. He worked hard to keep the land safe and steady.

Being a leader was not easy for the Duke of Zhou. He had to face many hard jobs during his time. Some people, called Shang partisans, fought against the Zhou rule. Even his own brother, Guan Shu, joined a revolt. This group of rebels was known as the Three Guards.

Within five years, the Duke defeated these rebels. He also led his armies to the east. This helped the Zhou dynasty control much more land.

The Duke of Zhou taught people about a special idea. He called this the Mandate of Heaven. He said that Heaven gives leaders the right to rule. But leaders must be good and fair to keep that right. They should show kindness to widows and orphans. He told King Cheng to rule with justice and mercy.

This idea helped explain why the Zhou replaced the Shang dynasty. It taught that Heaven follows the will of the people.

He also did a lot of work to build the kingdom. Around 1038 BC, he built a new capital city named Chengzhou. This city was built using very exact rules. It was a home for King Cheng and the Shang nobility. The Duke kept ruling from the old capital, Haojing.

He even gave land to many loyal people. When King Cheng grew up, the Duke gave the power back. He did not try to keep the throne for himself.

People have remembered the Duke of Zhou for many centuries. He is often called a culture hero. Some people think he wrote the I Ching and the Classic of Poetry. He is even called the "God of Dreams" in legends. This is because people believe he sends messages in dreams.
