Yu the Great was a legendary king in ancient China. He is credited with starting the Xia dynasty, which began the era of dynastic rule. He was also famous for his successful efforts to control massive floods. Many Chinese teachers, including the philosopher Confucius, praised Yu for his high moral character. Because of his virtues, he is one of the few monarchs honored with the title "the Great."

Historians note that there is no contemporary evidence that Yu actually lived. His traditional reign is dated to the late 3rd millennium BC. This was nearly a thousand years before the oracle bone script, which is the oldest known Chinese writing. His name does not appear on any artifacts from that era. The first time his name was inscribed on vessels was during the Western Zhou period, around 771 BC.

Yu's family history is described in several ancient texts. According to the Shiji, his father was a man named Gun. His ancestors included the Yellow Emperor, who was his great-great-grandfather. Some sources say Gun was a local official rather than an emperor. Yu was born into the Si clan, but he later used the name of his state, Xia, as his surname. He was known as a quick-witted and hardworking person with unwavering morals.

During the reign of Emperor Yao, the Chinese heartland suffered from frequent, devastating floods. These floods prevented people from developing their economy or society. Yu's father, Gun, tried to solve this by building dikes and dams. Gun spent nine years using a special self-expanding soil to block the water. However, these methods were ineffective at controlling the rivers.

Yu decided to take a different approach to the water problem. He studied the river systems closely to find out why his father's plan failed. Working with an agricultural master named Hou Ji, Yu developed a new system. Instead of just damming the water, he built irrigation canals. These canals redirected flood water into farm fields. He also spent thirteen years dredging the silty riverbeds to keep the water moving.

Yu was extremely dedicated to his work with the common people. He ate and slept alongside the laborers for thirteen years. Legends say he passed his own home three times during this period. The first time, he heard his wife was in labor. The second time, his son was already old enough to call for him. The third time, his son was over ten years old. Yu refused to enter his house because he felt he could not rest while people were homeless.

His success changed the landscape of China. He opened a narrow channel at Mount Longmen, which is now called "Yu's Gateway." This allowed water to flow more freely toward the ocean. Because of his engineering success, Emperor Shun passed the throne to Yu. Yu became emperor at the age of 53 and established his capital at Anyi. He then divided the land into nine provinces, known as zhou.

Yu's legacy is tied to the very structure of Chinese civilization. He created the Nine Tripod Cauldrons using bronze from the nine provinces. He ruled the Xia dynasty for forty-five years before he died. Some traditions say he died from an illness while hunting near Mount Kuaiji. Even though much of his life is told through myth, his story remains a vital part of how China understands its history and its leaders.
