Du Shi made a machine that changed how people worked. He used a waterwheel to power bellows. Bellows are tools that blow air into a hot furnace. This air helps melt metal to make cast iron. Before his invention, people used their hands or horses to blow air. This was a very hard job for people to do. His machine used the power of rushing water instead. This saved a huge amount of physical labor for workers.
