People use different names for this area depending on the situation. One way to define it is by using the Qinling–Huaihe Line. This is a line that separates the south from the north. This division is based on things like weather, money, and culture. Most people living here do not speak Standard Chinese as their first language. This makes the region feel very special and unique.

The weather in South China is quite different from the north. It has a subtropical or tropical monsoon climate. This means the weather stays warm for much of the year. It rarely gets cold enough for snow to fall. Because it is so warm and wet, rice is the main crop that farmers grow. In the past, people did not use roads as much as they used water. They used waterways, like rivers, to move goods and travel from place to place. This helped the region grow and connect with others.

The history of how we name this area has changed over time. In the past, some books defined it as six provinces. These were Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, Fujian, and Taiwan. Later, between 1949 and 1997, the region was seen as having only three provinces. These were Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan. Today, the regions of Hong Kong and Macau are also part of South China. This happened after the United Kingdom and Portugal handed them back to China. These changes show how the region has grown and shifted.

Many huge cities are found in this part of the world. Shenzhen is a very big city with over 10,358,381 people. Guangzhou is another massive city with over 9,702,144 people. Hong Kong is also very large, with about 7,071,576 people. Other busy cities include Dongguan, Foshan, and Shantou. Nanning is the capital of the Guangxi region. Even smaller places like Macau have many people living there too. These cities are important centers for life and work in the south.

South China is also a place where people go to learn. It has many famous and old universities. The University of Hong Kong was the first modern one, starting in 1887. In 1924, Sun Yat-sen University was started in Guangzhou. After 1949, Guangzhou became a central city for many new schools. There is even a school just for tropical farming. In Shenzhen, new schools like the Southern University of Science and Technology help people study science. These schools help the region become a leader in new ideas and technology.
