Yalu River

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Yalu River, also known as the Amnok River, is a major waterway in Asia. It serves as a natural international border between China and North Korea. Together with the Tumen River and part of Paektu Mountain, it marks the boundary between these two nations. The river valley has been a significant site for military conflicts for many centuries. Today, it remains a vital geographic and political feature of the region.

Many different names describe this river, reflecting its long history. The Chinese name, Yalu, means "duck-green." This name was recorded during the Tang dynasty. An 8th-century text called the Tongdian says the water resembled the color of a mallard's head. The Korean name, Amnok, is a Sino-Korean reading of the same name. Some scholars believe the name comes from the Manchu phrase "yalu ula." In the Manchu language, this means "the boundary between two countries." Another theory suggests the name combines its two upper branches, called "Ap" and "Nok."

The river follows a complex path through the landscape. It begins at a high elevation on Paektu Mountain. From there, the water flows south toward the city of Hyesan. The river then sweeps northwest toward Linjiang. Eventually, it turns south again to empty into Korea Bay. This mouth is located between Dandong in China and Sinuiju in North Korea. The river is very long and receives water from many tributaries. These include the Ai and Hun rivers from China. It also receives water from the Changjin, Hochon, and Togro rivers from Korea.

Geography also defines the political division of the river. There are approximately 205 islands located within the Yalu. In 1962, a border treaty divided these islands based on the ethnic groups living there. North Korea possesses 127 of these islands. China possesses 78 of these islands. Because of these specific division criteria, some islands like Hwanggumpyong Island sit right next to the Chinese side. The river's depth changes as it moves toward the sea. It is shallow near Hyesan but becomes much deeper near the Yellow Sea. The estuary is a protected area known as the Amrok River estuary Important Bird Area.

History has frequently unfolded along these banks. The river basin was the home of the ancient Korean kingdom of Goguryeo. The former capital of Goguryeo was located at the city of Ji'an. The river has also been a site of major military battles. These include the Battle of the Yalu River in 1894 and a battle in 1904. During the Korean War, the river became a major focal point. As United Nations troops approached the river, China intervened in the conflict. Most bridges across the river were destroyed during the fighting. Only the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge remains today.

During the Korean War, the area around the western end of the river was famous. It earned the nickname "MiG Alley." This name refers to the MiG-15 fighter planes used by North Korean, Chinese, and Soviet forces. These planes fought for air supremacy over North Korea. The war also inspired the Chinese military anthem, "The Chinese People's Volunteers Army Song." This song mentions the Yalu River to help boost morale.

Today, the Yalu River is essential for the local economy. It is used for hydroelectric power through several large dams. The Sup'ung Dam is one of the largest hydroelectric dams in Asia. This dam has created an artificial body of water called Supung Lake. Other important dams include the Unbong Dam and the Taipingwan Dam. The river also helps transport lumber from the nearby forests. Local populations also rely on the river for fish. While the river is not easily navigable for most of its length, it remains a central part of life for the people in Jilin, Liaoning, North Pyongan, Chagang, and Ryanggang.
