Wonju is the most populous city in the Gangwon Province of South Korea. As of 2023, the city had a population of 364,860 people. It is located approximately east of the capital city, Seoul. Geographically, Wonju sits at the southwestern corner of Gangwon Province. It shares borders with Gyeonggi Province to the west and North Chungcheong Province to the south. Within its own province, it borders Yeongwol County to the east and Hoengseong County to the north.

The landscape of Wonju is unique compared to its surroundings. Much of the Gangwon Province is defined by mountainous terrain. However, Wonju is not a mountainous area. Instead, the city sits in a basin. This basin is part of a wide plain created by the Seom River. This river system has shaped the flat land where the city grows.

Administratively, the city is organized into several different types of districts. These include one eup, which is a town, and eight myeon, which are townships. There are also 16 dong, or neighborhoods. The sizes of these areas vary greatly. For example, the neighborhood of Wonin-dong is very small at only 0.48 square kilometers. In contrast, the township of Munmak-eup covers 104.34 square kilometers. According to 2021 data, the total area of Wonju is 872.56 square kilometers.

Wonju has a significant historical background. During the era of Great Joseon, the city served as the capital of the historic Gangwon Province. This was one of the Eight Provinces of Korea. The city also played a role during the Korean War. On June 30, 1950, the Republic of Korea Army conducted massacres against suspected communists in the area. Later, on July 2, 1950, the Korean People's Army attacked Wonju. They eventually captured the city on July 7. Throughout the war, Wonju was the site of three crucial battles.

The city offers many cultural and recreational activities for its residents. One notable attraction is the Rail Park. This park was built on disused rail tracks that connect the stations of Pandae and Ganhyeon. Visitors can enjoy a scenic bike ride that lasts about 40 minutes. This ride provides views of the surrounding mountains.

The city is also a religious center, as the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wonju is based there. For history and art lovers, there are many museums. These include the Wonju Museum, the Chiak Folk Museum, and the Mureung Museum.

Education is a major part of the city's infrastructure. There are many facilities for students of all ages. In 2015, data from Wonju City Hall showed there were 71 kindergartens. The city also has 48 elementary schools and 22 middle schools. There are 20 high schools, consisting of 15 general high schools, 2 special purpose high schools, and 3 specialized high schools. Higher education is supported by several institutions. These include Gangneung-Wonju National University, Halla University, Sangji University, Yonsei University (Mirae Campus), and Kyungdong University.

Sports and famous figures also define the identity of Wonju. The city is the home of the Wonju DB Promy basketball team. They compete in the Korean Basketball League and play at the Wonju Gymnasium in Myeongnyun il-dong. The team has won three championships: in 2002–03, 2004–05, and 2007–08.
