Many small islands sit near the coast, such as Ryo Island and Hwangt'o Island. To the west of the city, you will find Mt. Changdok and Mt. Nap'al. Mount Kŭmgang is also located near this coastal area. The city is a major center for the province and has a population of about 329,207 people.

Life in Wonsan is shaped by its location by the sea. Because it is a coastal city, people often eat seafood. One local delicacy is boiled rice with clam meat. The city is also a place of work with many different industries. It has a shipyard, a cement factory, and a chemistry enterprise. There is even a large factory that makes railway rolling stock.
