The geography of Kaesong is defined by a mix of mountains and rivers. The urban district is surrounded by the Songak and Pongmyong mountain ranges. The Songak mountains reach a height of 489 meters. In the northern part of the city, the Ahobiryŏng range forms the border. This range includes several peaks, such as Mts. Chŏnma, which stands 757 meters tall. Water plays a massive role in the landscape of Kaesong. The Imjin River marks the northeastern border of the city. The Ryesong River runs along the western border and flows into the Han River. Many smaller streams, like the Samich'ŏn and Wŏlamch'ŏn, also drain into the Han. In the southwest, the river basins create wide alluvial plains. These plains include areas named P'ungdŏkbŏl, Singwangbŏl, and Samsŏngbŏl. These flat lands are made of soil left by flowing water.

The climate in Kaesong is described as a humid continental climate. This means the area experiences cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. The average annual temperature is about 10 °C. In January, the average temperature drops to −5.9 °C. In August, the average temperature rises to 24.7 °C. The city receives between 1,300 and 1,400 millimeters of rainfall every year. Interestingly, Kaesong has a frost-free period of 180 days. This is the longest period without frost in all of North Korea.

Kaesong has a deep history that stretches back to the Neolithic period. Archaeologists have found Jeulmun pottery and stone axes in the area. Over many centuries, the city belonged to various states. It was part of the Mahan confederacy and the Goguryeo kingdom. It was also part of the Baekje kingdom for about 100 years. In 555, the territory became part of the Silla kingdom. During the Silla period, the area was known as Song'ak-gun.

It became a wealthy trade center famous for producing Korean ginseng. In 960, the name was changed to Gaegyeong. The city remained the capital for 487 years. However, in 1394, the capital was moved to Hanyang, which is modern-day Seoul.

Modern history brought many changes to the control of Kaesong. During the Japanese occupation from 1910 to 1945, the city was called Kaijō. After World War II, most of Kaesong was part of South Korea. However, during the Korean War, North Korean forces captured the city. The 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement eventually placed the city under North Korean control. This made Kaesong unique, as it was the only city to change control from South to North due to the war.
