Goryeo was a powerful Korean state that ruled the Korean Peninsula from 918 to 1392. It emerged during a period of division known as the Later Three Kingdoms. This era was characterized by three competing states: Later Silla, Later Baekje, and Later Goguryeo. Goryeo is significant because it achieved what historians call a "true national unification." It did not just conquer land. It also incorporated the ruling classes of the northern kingdom of Balhae. This helped merge the identities of older kingdoms like Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla. This process created the foundation for modern Korean identity. The name "Korea" is actually derived from the name Goryeo.

The founding of Goryeo was a response to political instability. In the early 10th century, the state of Taebong was ruled by Kung Ye. Kung Ye was an erratic leader who claimed to be the Maitreya Buddha. He was also known to be cruel and paranoid. In 918, his own generals chose a military leader named Wang Kon to replace him. Wang Kon became the first king and took the title Taejo. He moved the capital to Kaesong. He also worked to rebuild the ancient city of Pyongyang. Taejo wanted to establish Goryeo as the rightful successor to the ancient Goguryeo kingdom.

Unification was achieved through both military strength and diplomatic kindness. In 927, the leader of Later Baekje, Kyŏn Hwŏn, attacked the Silla capital. Taejo moved to help Silla, though he suffered a major defeat near Daegu. Despite this, the balance of power eventually shifted toward Goryeo. In 935, the kingdom of Silla peacefully surrendered to Goryeo. In 936, Taejo led an army of 87,500 soldiers to conquer Later Baekje. Taejo was also very welcoming to refugees from Balhae. After the Khitan Liao dynasty destroyed Balhae in 927, tens of thousands of households fled to Goryeo. Taejo treated the Balhae crown prince as a member of his own royal family. This helped create a unified population of skilled people.

Religion and culture flourished during this era. Goryeo is often called the "Golden Age of Buddhism." Buddhism was the state religion and held massive influence over society. In the 11th century, the capital city contained 70 different temples. This religious devotion led to incredible artistic achievements. Artists created beautiful items like celadon pottery and intricate Buddhist paintings.

The state also valued education and industry. The capital at Kaesong became a major center for trade. Merchants traveled from very far away to conduct business. Some traders even arrived from the Middle East. This international commerce helped Goryeo grow wealthy and culturally diverse.

Political structures also underwent important changes to keep the state stable. Early on, powerful regional lords known as hojok held much control. To build alliances, Taejo married 29 women from prominent hojok families. This created a large network of relatives in high positions. Later, the fourth ruler, Gwangjong, worked to increase the power of the central monarchy. In 956, he freed many prisoners of war and refugees. These people had previously been enslaved by the regional lords. By freeing them, Gwangjong reduced the influence of the hojok. This also increased the number of people who could pay taxes to the central government.

Despite its successes, Goryeo faced constant external threats. The state frequently fought northern empires like the Liao and the Jin. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the Mongol Empire invaded. Goryeo became a vassal state of the Yuan dynasty during this time. However, Goryeo later attacked the Yuan as that empire began to decline. This effort was part of a policy to reclaim ancestral lands. In its final years, Goryeo also fought off professional Japanese pirates and Red Turban Rebels from China. The state showed great military ability even during these difficult periods.

The end of the Goryeo dynasty came through internal political shifts. A proposed military attack against the Ming dynasty led to a coup d'état. General Yi Sŏnggye led this movement, which ended Goryeo rule in 1392. This transition led to the establishment of the Joseon dynasty. Even though the dynasty ended, the legacy of Goryeo remained. The cultural, religious, and social structures built during this time helped shape the future of the Korean Peninsula. The name Goryeo continues to be recognized globally through the name of the nation itself.
