It sits in the southeastern part of the Lesser Khingan Range. The city faces the city of Jiamusi to the south across the Songhua River. To the north, the Amur River marks a border with Russia's Jewish Autonomous Oblast. Hegang is well known as a major place for producing coal in China. This resource has shaped how the city works for a long time.

Coal mining is the main way many people earn a living here. The city has 39 coal mines that can produce 18 million tons of coal every year. Much of this is high-quality coking coal used to make coal gas. This coal is often shipped by rail to industrial cities like Anyang, Anshan, and Benxi. Besides coal, the ground also holds minerals like graphite, clay, and silica. The city also uses coal to help create electricity for the region.

In the late 1890s, this area was mostly empty and wild. People began to move there to farm as the government encouraged them to. In 1914, workers found a coalfield in a place called Haoli. This discovery led to the creation of the Xinghua Mines. The area was even renamed Xingshan after these mines. By 1926, a railway was built to connect Hegang to Jiamusi. Later, the city saw many changes during different times in Chinese history.

Many people live in the different districts of Hegang. In 2020, the census showed a population of 891,271 people. Most of these people live in the six urban districts.

The weather can be quite extreme in this part of the world. Winters are long, dry, and very cold. Summers are warm and wet, with most rain falling between June and August. Temperatures have been recorded as high as 37.7 degrees Celsius and as low as -38.5 degrees Celsius.

Life in Hegang involves more than just mining. Many people work in farming and raising animals. Farmers grow crops like rice, maize, and soybeans. They also raise pigs, chickens, geese, and dairy cows. The city is also a place for learning, with schools like Hegang Normal College. People can travel to the city by highway or by visiting nearby airports. A new airport at Luobei is even planned to open in 2027.
