It sits along the middle and lower parts of the Songhua River. The city is near the border of Russia. Across the Ussuri River and the Heilongjiang, you can find Russia's Khabarovsk Krai. The land here is mostly made of flat plains. In the east, three large rivers meet: the Amur, Songhua, and Ussuri. This meeting of rivers created the Sanjiang Plain.

Jiamusi has a very long history. The Nanai people first named the area Giyamusi in 1720. In the Manchu language, that name means "inn." For a long time, the land was not used much for farming. This was because the growing season was short and the climate was harsh. Later, the area became a trading post called Dongxing in 1888. As more people moved in, the city grew into a busy commercial center.

Today, Jiamusi is a major hub for transport and trade. It has a large port on the Songhua River. This port was first built in 1919 and later expanded in 1937. Ships can sail from Jiamusi to places like Harbin or Khabarovsk in Russia. The city is also a center for many different industries. It produces things like paper, wood pulp, and farm tools. It also makes chemicals, plastics, and fertilizers.

Many people use Jiamusi to travel to other parts of China. Two important railways, the Suijia and Tujia, meet in the city. You can take a train from Jiamusi to cities like Beijing or Dalian. A new intercity railway also connects Jiamusi to Harbin. This trip used to take six hours, but now it only takes two and a half hours. People also fly in and out of the Jiamusi Dongjiao Airport. This airport connects the city to places like Seoul and Khabarovsk.
