It sits near the border of Russia's Primorsky Krai. The city gets its name from the Mudan River, which means "Peony River." This river flows right through the area. The land is filled with hills and mountains. To the east, the ground rises toward the Changbai Mountains. The middle of the region is part of the Hegu Basin. The lowest spot is Suifenhe City, which borders Russia. The highest point is Zhangguangcai mountain.

The weather in Mudanjiang changes quite a bit. It has a climate with hot and humid summers. The winters are very cold and dry. Spring and autumn seasons are quite short here. Even though winters are cold, the basin helps protect the city from biting winds. This makes the winter temperatures warmer than other parts of the province. Most of the rain falls between June and August. The city also gets a lot of bright sunshine throughout the year.

Mudanjiang has a very long history. About 2,300 years ago, the Sushen people lived in the Mudan River valley. They created the State of Mo. Later, around 755 AD, the Balhae people built a capital called Longquan Fu near Lake Jingpo. In 1903, Imperial Russia built a train station for the Chinese Eastern Railway. This helped the area grow quickly. For a long time, it was just a large village. By the 1920s, merchants from France, Russia, Britain, and Denmark set up offices there. This helped trade expand very fast.

Today, the city is a very important place for travel and work.
