It serves as a vital regional transport hub within the country. The city is positioned near the border of Russia's Primorsky Krai. It acts as a gateway between different parts of East Asia. The name Mudanjiang comes from the Mudan River, which means "Peony River." This river flows directly through the heart of the city.

The geography of the region is defined by varied terrain. Much of the prefecture consists of mountains and hills. To the east, the land rises toward the Changbai Mountains. The central area belongs to the Hegu Basin. The lowest point is Suifenhe City, which borders Russia. The highest point is Zhangguangcai mountain. This varied landscape shapes how people live and move through the area.

Mudanjiang experiences a monsoon-influenced, humid continental climate, known as Köppen Dwa. This means the city has hot, humid summers. The winters are very cold and dry. Spring and autumn seasons are quite brief. However, the basin location provides a unique advantage. It helps protect the city from biting winds. Because of this, winter temperatures are warmer than in much of the rest of the province. Most of the annual rainfall occurs between June and August. The city also receives 2,368 hours of bright sunshine every year.

The history of the area spans thousands of years. The Sushen people lived in the Mudan River valley 2,300 years ago. They established the State of Mo. Later, around 755 AD, the Balhae people established their Upper capital, Longquan Fu. This was located near Lake Jingpo, south of the modern city. In 1903, Imperial Russia built a station for the Chinese Eastern Railway. This event triggered significant local development. Both Chinese and Russian settlers arrived to live in the growing area.

During the 1920s, Mudanjiang saw rapid commercial expansion. Merchants from France, Russia, Britain, and Denmark set up sub-agencies there. This period transformed the area from a large village into a trade center. In the 1930s, the city experienced growth under Japanese occupation. It was known as Botankou during this time. It became a military and administrative center after the Tumen to Jiamusi railway was built in 1933. The city was later captured by the Soviet Army on August 16, 1945. In 1948, it became the capital of Songjiang Province.

Today, Mudanjiang is a major economic and transport center.

It is a key railway junction where the Binsui and Tujia railways meet. Trains connect the city to major hubs like Beijing and Dalian. The Hailang International Airport is the second largest in Heilongjiang province. The economy relies on tourism and light manufacturing. Pillar industries include automobile accessories, paper making, and forest products. In 2015, the city's GDP reached RMB 118.63 billion. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,290,208.

Education is a significant part of the city's identity. Mudanjiang Normal University is a large provincial institution. It covers an area of 1.05 million square meters. It has more than 22,000 students. Mudanjiang University was founded in 1983. It has over 10,000 students and 43 different majors. The city also hosts Mudanjiang No. 1 High School. This school was founded in 1945 and is a major demonstration school. These institutions help connect the city to broader academic systems.

Mudanjiang also maintains strong international connections. The city is twinned with several locations around the world. These include Ussuriysk in Russia and Paju in South Korea. It also has ties to cities in Australia, Japan, Finland, and Germany. This global network helps the city remain a connected regional player. Through its transport, industry, and international relations, Mudanjiang remains a central part of Heilongjiang province.
