It serves as a vital industrial hub within the Central Plains urban agglomeration. The city is a key junction for the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway. It also functions as a significant center for scientific research. As of 2025, it ranks 138th globally for scientific research outputs. This high ranking is tracked by the Nature Index. The city is recognized by several national titles in China. These include being a national garden city and a national forest city.

The geography of Xinxiang places it in a strategic position. It sits between 113 degrees 23 minutes and 114 degrees 59 minutes east longitude. Its latitude is between 34 degrees 53 minutes and 35 degrees 50 minutes north. The Yellow River forms a natural border to the south. This river separates Xinxiang from the cities of Zhengzhou and Kaifeng. To the west, the city connects to Jiaozuo and borders Shanxi province. To the north, the Taihang mountains are nearby. Administratively, the city manages a complex network of areas. It oversees four urban districts: Weibin, Hongqi, Muye, and Fengquan. It also manages three county-level cities, which are Huixian, Weihui, and Changyuan. Additionally, there are five counties: Xinxiang, Huojia, Yuanyang, Yanjin, and Fengqiu. The urban or metro area is expanding very quickly. As of 2018, about 2,743,200 people lived in these conurbating areas. These areas include the four districts and several counties. The city's total population reached 6,251,929 during the 2020 Chinese Census.

History shows that Xinxiang has been a stage for major shifts in China. During the period of Yao and Shun, the land belonged to Jizhou, Yanzhou, and Yuzhou. Ancient battles like the Battle of Mingtiao and the Battle of Muye occurred here. These conflicts helped change the course of Chinese history. The name "Xinxiang" was officially established in 586 AD during the Sui dynasty. In 960 AD, the Chenqiao Mutiny took place in modern-day Fengqiu County. This mutiny against Guo Zongxun led to the start of the Song dynasty. Between 1949 and 1952, Xinxiang served as the capital for Pingyuan Province.

The economy of Xinxiang is driven by heavy industry and textiles. The city is a well-known base for the cotton and textile industries. Major enterprises include the Golden Dragon Copper Group and Bailu Chemical Fibre. The Xinfei Electric Group is another important company. It is a subsidiary of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China. This group produces items like refrigerated trucks and military vehicles. The city is also a major rail junction. It connects the Beijing-Guangzhou, Xinxiang-Yueshan, and Zhengzhou–Jinan Railways.

For water transport, the Wei River was made navigable for small vessels in the 1950s. This connection links the city with Tianjin. The metro area features two main stations: Xinxiang Railway Station and Xinxiang East Railway Station.

Despite its growth, the city has faced significant environmental and natural challenges. In July 2021, heavy flooding in Henan impacted the region. This event affected approximately 470,000 people and large amounts of cropland. Air quality has also been a concern for researchers. In 2015, a Greenpeace report noted severe pollution in Henan province. During that time, Xinxiang's PM2.5 concentration was 114.6 micrograms per cubic meter. This was over 11 times the safe limit set by the WHO.

Soil contamination was also identified in some areas. In 2015 and 2016, samples of wheat in Wangcun showed high cadmium levels. The government responded by purchasing contaminated wheat and changing land use. This demonstrates the ongoing management of urban and agricultural health.
