geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Xianyang is a prefecture-level city located in central Shaanxi province. It sits on the northern bank of the Wei River. The city is just a few kilometers west of Xi'an. Together, they form a massive urban agglomeration. This metropolitan area contains more than 7.17 million inhabitants. Xianyang serves as a major gateway for the region. It is the site of the Xi'an Xianyang International Airport. This is the largest airport in Northwest China. It is also ranked among the 40 busiest airports globally.

The geography of Xianyang is defined by the Guanzhong Basin. The terrain features distinct elevation gradients. The land steps down from the north to the south. The northern area forms the southern edge of the Loess Plateau. This region is marked by eroded gullies and low hills. In the northeast, Shimen Mountain rises to 1,826 meters. The central and southern parts consist of the Wei River Plain. This is a flat area of the Guanzhong Plain. Most surface water comes from river runoff and groundwater. The Jinghe is the most significant local tributary. All local rivers eventually flow into the Wei River. This river is a major tributary of the Yellow River.

The name "Xianyang" carries a specific meaning. It translates to "fully yang." This refers to the city's sunny orientation. The city lies south of the Jiuzong Mountains. It also sits north of the Wei River. Both of these features provide sunlight-rich environments. In 350 BC, the city became the capital of the state of Qin. This occurred during the Warring States period. The minister Shang Yang designed the city layout. He organized the move of the administration from Yueyang. Xianyang served as a capital for over 140 years.

History changed significantly in 221 BC. Emperor Qin Shi Huang established the first centralized empire. Xianyang became the center of politics, economy, and culture. The Emperor expanded the city beyond its original walls. He built replicas of palaces from conquered states. He even created a network of 300 palaces. These were connected by elevated roads in the Wei valley. He built the Xin Palace and the Wei Palace. Later, he constructed the massive Epang Palace. These huge projects required enormous amounts of manpower. This diverted many resources away from essential agriculture.

The fall of the Qin dynasty brought great destruction. In 206 BC, the rebel leader Xiang Yu burned the city. This event destroyed many rare books from the royal library. However, the region remained historically vital. In 202 BC, Liu Bang founded the Han dynasty. He built his new capital, Chang'an, just miles away. This new capital sat across the Wei River. Xianyang remained a key imperial region for many other dynasties. It was also the first stop on the ancient Silk Road. This long history left behind a vast treasury of relics.

Today, Xianyang is a center for science and education. It is one of the top 200 cities for scientific research. This is tracked by the Nature Index. The city is home to Northwest A&F University. This is a member of the "Project 985" club. This organization includes 39 reputable universities in China. The university is a world leader in agricultural science. The city also contains many modern landmarks. Xianyang Lake is the largest artificial lake in Northwest China. The area is rich in cultural heritage sites. There are 5,313 registered sites in the city. These include 1,037 ancient ruins and 1,135 ancient tombs.

The city's administration has evolved through many stages. It was once a large subregion with 13 counties. In 1983, it became a prefecture-level city. This changed the former county-level city into Qindu District. Some areas, like Zhouzhi and Huxian, moved to Xi'an. Other areas, like Wugong County, joined Xianyang. In 2018, Bin County was reconstituted as Binzhou City. This city is managed by Xianyang. The city continues to grow alongside the Xi'an metropolitan area. It connects ancient imperial history with modern scientific progress.
