It sits at the northernmost edge of the Henan province. The city borders Puyang to the east and Hebi and Xinxiang to the south. To the north and west, it meets the provinces of Hebei and Shanxi. Anyang is a place where ancient history and modern industry meet. It is recognized as a national historical and cultural city. This title reflects its deep importance to Chinese civilization.

The geography of Anyang changes depending on where you stand. The western part of the city is higher in elevation. This area contains the foothills of the Taihang Mountains. As you move toward the east, the land becomes lower. This eastern region is part of the North China Plain. The climate follows a monsoon-influenced pattern with four distinct seasons. Winters are cold and very dry, with a January average of -2.2°C. Summers are hot and humid, with July averaging 27.1°C. Most of the annual rain falls during July and August. The history of Anyang reaches back thousands of years. In the Stone Age, prehistoric people lived in caves at Xiaonanhai. Archaeologists found over 7,000 artifacts there, such as stone tools and bone fossils. Around 2000 BC, legendary sage-kings like Zhuanxu and Emperor Ku are said to have ruled nearby. In the 14th century BC, King Pangeng established the capital of the Shang dynasty. This city was known as Yin. It was the first stable capital in Chinese history. The capital served 12 different kings over eight generations. One notable ruler was Wu Ding, who led the dynasty to its peak power. The dynasty eventually fell in 1046 BC.

Archaeological discoveries have made Anyang famous worldwide. In 1899, researchers discovered the Yinxu ruins northwest of the city.

This site contains the royal tombs of the Shang dynasty. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. Visitors can explore the Yinxu Museum to see these ancient remains. The site is also the birthplace of the Oracle bone inscriptions. These are early records written on bones and tortoise shells. Another important site is the Museum of Chinese Characters. These discoveries help us understand the origins of Chinese writing.

Today, Anyang is a powerful industrial center. The economy is driven by the production of metals like iron and steel. The Shagang Group is a major steel producer operating here. The city also has large reserves of minerals like limestone, clay, and dolomite. In 2021, the total gross domestic product (GDP) was 243.55 billion renminbi. The secondary sector, which includes industry, made up 43.7% of this GDP. The tertiary sector, or service industry, was even larger at 46.6%. To support modern travel, the Anyang Hongqiqu Airport opened in November 2023. This airport serves millions of people across northern Henan and nearby provinces.

Many unique landmarks define the character of the city. The Wenfeng Pagoda is a famous symbol of Anyang.
