It sits on the southern bank of the Yellow River. The city is a significant center for scientific research in central China. According to the Nature Index, it ranks as the 138th top city globally for scientific output. The city is home to Henan University, which is part of the national Double First Class University Plan. Kaifeng is also recognized as one of the Eight Ancient Capitals of China. It has served as a capital eight different times throughout its long history.

The geography of the region places Kaifeng near several important locations. It borders the provincial capital, Zhengzhou, to the west. To the northwest lies Xinxiang, while Shangqiu is located to the east. Zhoukou sits to the southeast, and Xuchang is to the southwest. To the northeast, it borders Heze in Shandong province.

The city administers five districts and four counties. These include the Xiangfu, Longting, Gulou, Yuwantai, and Shunhe Hui districts. It also manages Qi, Tongxu, Weishi, and Lankao counties.

The name "Kaifeng" has deep historical roots. The area was named after the Qin dynasty conquered China in the second century BC. The name literally means "opening the border." It can also figuratively mean "hidden" or "vengeance." Originally, the city was called Qifeng. Emperor Jing of Han changed the name to Kaifeng to avoid a naming taboo. This taboo occurred because the syllable "qi" was part of the Emperor's name. Throughout history, the city has held many other names. These include Daliang, Bianliang, Bianzhou, and Nanjing.

Kaifeng's history began with ancient cities like Yi and Qifeng. During the Warring States period, the lords of Wei held the title of King of Liang. In 361 BC, King Hui of Wei moved the capital to Daliang. This move led to the construction of a canal linking a local river to the Yellow River. After the Qin conquest, Daliang was largely abandoned. However, the Han dynasty saw a revival under Liu Wu, the Prince of Liang. He restored the city walls and built many structures. Later, in 202, Cao Cao repaired the Suiyang Canal. This canal connected the Bian River to the Yangtze and Huaihe Rivers. This connection allowed grain to be transported north, helping the economy recover.

The city reached a massive peak during the Song dynasty. It was known as the Eastern Capital of Bianliang, or Dongjing.

Merchants sold fine goods like gold, jade, and exquisite foods. The main street was called the Imperial Street. Patrolmen guarded the streets and managed traffic to keep the city orderly.

Many incredible inventions and landmarks defined this era. The engineer Su Song built a famous astronomical clock tower. This device used a water wheel and a water clock for power. It featured an escapement mechanism and an endless power-transmitting chain drive.

Despite its prosperity, the city faced many challenges. A major plague of typhus caused massive deaths in 992. The city also faced many invasions. In 1127, the Jurchen Jin dynasty captured the city during the Jingkang Incident. This event caused the Song imperial family to be taken away. Later, the Mongol forces besieged and captured the city in 1233. During the Yuan dynasty, Kaifeng became the capital of Henan Jiangbei Province. In the Ming dynasty, the city returned to its old name, Kaifeng. Today, the city is a large metropolitan area with over 1.7 million residents.
