Chang'an was a massive, influential capital city located in China's Shaanxi Province.

It sat south of the Wei River in the Guanzhong Region. This area provided natural protection for the city. For many centuries, Chang'an served as the seat of power for several Chinese dynasties. These included the Western Han and the Tang dynasties. At various points in history, it was the largest city in the world. Today, the site is known by its modern name, Xi'an.

The history of this site began long before the famous dynasties. People have lived in this area since Neolithic times. During the 5th millennium BC, the Yangshao culture had a major center at Banpo. To the southwest, the Western Zhou had twin capitals called Fenghao near the Feng River. The state of Qin ruled from nearby Xianyang to the north of the Wei River. The famous Terracotta Army of the First Emperor lies to the east of the site.

The Han dynasty transformed Chang'an into a major imperial center. Emperor Liu Bang moved his court to the Changle Palace in 200 BC. He chose this location because the Guanzhong Region offered a large population and great defense. His officials built massive structures like the Weiyang Palace. This was the largest palace ever built. It was nearly seven times larger than the Forbidden City.

To protect these palaces, an arsenal was placed between them. This helped secure the new capital.

Building the city required an enormous amount of labor and planning. In 191 BC, Emperor Liu Ying completed the city walls. He used between 146,000 and 290,000 workers for 30-day periods called corvées. He also used 20,000 convicts for continuous work. The city streets were wide and lined with trees like poplar and cypress.

The walls had an irregular shape. Some believe the walls were built to mimic the Little Dipper star pattern. Others say the shape was forced by existing buildings and large palaces.

During the Tang dynasty, Chang'an reached incredible heights of population and wealth. By 750 AD, records described it as a "million-man city." Modern estimates suggest 800,000 to 1,000,000 people lived inside the walls. The entire metropolitan area could support around 2,000,000 people.

The city was the eastern terminus of the Silk Road. This made it a cosmopolitan hub for trade and culture. It was a center for politics and military power. It was not just a place for making goods, but a place for consuming them.

Many different groups ruled Chang'an through the centuries. It served as a capital for the Jin, the Sixteen Kingdoms, and the Northern Dynasties. Under the Later Qin, the city became an important center for Buddhism. Later, the Sui dynasty built a new capital called Daxing in the same location. The Tang dynasty then rebuilt the city as Chang'an. The city's importance eventually faded after the warlord Zhu Wen moved the population to Luoyang in 904 AD.

The legacy of Chang'an survives in the modern landscape of Xi'an. The Ming dynasty built new city walls around the old palace districts. These walls were about one-eighth the size of the medieval city. Today, visitors can see remnants of this long history. You can see ancient canals and grand religious sites.
