It has become the second largest city in Shaanxi since the early 1990s. The city sits in a valley that opens out toward the east. High hills surround the city on three sides. This specific geography makes the location very strategic. Baoji controls a mountain pass in the Qin Mountains. This pass sits between the Wei River valley and the Jialing River. Because of this, the city acts as a natural bridge between different regions.

The history of Baoji stretches back thousands of years. Its roots can be traced to 2000 BC. The city thrived significantly during the Tang dynasty. One of its most important historical features is its connection to the Silk Road. The ancient Northern Silk Road passed directly through Baoji. This was the northernmost route of a massive trade network.

This route connected the ancient Chinese capital of Chang'an to the West. It traveled over the Wushaoling Mountain to Wuwei. From there, it emerged in Kashgar and linked to ancient Parthia. This connection made Baoji a vital part of international history.

Baoji is often called the gateway between western and eastern China. This title comes from its role in modern transportation. Most trains traveling from Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an pass through Baoji. These trains are heading toward Gansu, Sichuan, Xinjiang, and Tibet. Railways first reached the city in 1937. This arrival was a key factor in the city's modern growth. Today, Baoji is a large industrial center. It serves as a major hub for moving people and goods across the country.

The city contains many significant cultural and archaeological sites. The Baoji Bronze Museum is a major attraction. It holds more than 120,000 pieces of cultural relics. Most of these items are from the Zhou dynasty. In Fufeng County, visitors can find the Famen Temple.

This temple is famous because it is home to one of Buddha's finger bones. The area is also linked to the legendary Yandi, a forefather of the Han Chinese. His tomb is in the southern part of the city. His temple is located in the north.

Nature and ancient engineering also define the landscape. On Mount Taibai, you can find traces of old roadways. These were built during the Three Kingdoms period, between 220 and 280 CE. These paths used wooden plank bridges attached to the side of the mountain. While they are mostly unusable now due to decay, they remain a popular attraction. To the south, the plank road into the Qin Mountains begins. Other natural sites include the Jialing Jiang Fountainhead. This area features small waterfalls and forests. To the north, the giant loess hill of Bei Puo offers panoramic views. From there, you can see small farming villages.

Modern industry is a massive part of the Baoji economy. The Baoji Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone was established in 1992. The State Council approved it as a national hi-tech zone. This zone focuses on several specific industries. These include auto parts, electronics, and information technology. It also supports the pharmaceutical, bioengineering, and new materials industries. The transportation network for this zone is very advanced. It includes National Highway 310 and the Xi'an Xianyang International Airport. This infrastructure supports the city's high-tech growth.

Baoji is also a significant center for administration and population. According to the 2020 Chinese census, the prefecture-level city has 3,321,853 people. The built-up metro area consists of three urban districts. These districts have a population of 1,475,962 inhabitants. The city also serves a military purpose. It is the headquarters for the 21st Group Army of the People's Liberation Army. This group is responsible for defending China's northwest borders. This role highlights the continued strategic importance of Baoji in the modern era.
