This mutiny against Guo Zongxun led to the start of the Song dynasty. Between 1949 and 1952, Xinxiang served as the capital for Pingyuan Province.

This event affected approximately 470,000 people and large amounts of cropland. Air quality has also been a concern for researchers. In 2015, a Greenpeace report noted severe pollution in Henan province. During that time, Xinxiang's PM2.5 concentration was 114.6 micrograms per cubic meter. This was over 11 times the safe limit set by the WHO.
