Some companies there export frozen vegetables to other countries. There are also large coal mines nearby. These mines help provide energy for electricity.

The history of Shangqiu is deeply tied to the origins of Chinese civilization. Legendary figures like the Emperors Shennong, Zhuanxu, and Ku are said to have lived in this area during the 25th century BC. The area was a vital base for the ancient Shang dynasty, which lasted from approximately 1600 BC to 1046 BC. Later, the area became the state of Song during the Spring and Autumn era. During the Han dynasty, the city of Suiyang served as the capital for the Liang Kingdom. This period saw King Xiao of Liang act as a patron for famous poets like Sima Xiangru.

Shangqiu played a critical role during the transition of various Chinese dynasties. During the Tang dynasty, a ten-month siege of Suiyang in 757 AD helped turn the tide of the An Lushan rebellion. Later, Zhao Kuangyin, who became the Emperor Taizu of Song, served as a military governor in this region. Because of his connection to the area, he named his new dynasty "Song." The city even served as a temporary capital for the Northern Song dynasty under the name Nanjing. This happened as the court retreated south following the Jingkang Incident in 1127.

Today, Shangqiu is a massive regional transportation hub, often called the city of the "golden cross." This nickname comes from the intersection of several major transport routes. The Longhai railway, completed in 1916, runs east to west through the city. This line is part of the "European-Asia continental landbridge," connecting the port of Lianyungang to Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The Beijing-Kowloon railway also crosses here, having been built in 1996. Additionally, the city is served by national highways and the Shangqiu–Hangzhou high-speed railway, which began in 2020.

The economy of the region relies on both traditional agriculture and modern industry. The fertile soil of the North China Plain allows for massive crop production. As of 2005, about 719,864 hectares were planted with crops like wheat, maize, cotton, and sesame. The city also has significant energy resources, including large coal reserves. The Yongcheng-Xiayi coal mine is estimated to hold 10 billion tons of coal. This resource supports local industries like electricity generation and aluminium electrolysis. Furthermore, the Kedi group, a local food company, is a top exporter of frozen vegetables in China.

Demographically, Shangqiu is home to a very large population. According to the 2020 Chinese census, there were 7,816,831 inhabitants. Within this total, 2,831,814 people live in the built-up metro area. This urban area includes the Liangyuan and Suiyang districts, as well as Yucheng county. The city's administrative structure includes two districts, one county-level city, and six counties. This large population supports a variety of institutions, including Shangqiu University and several specialized professional colleges.
