Henan is a large province located in central China. It sits right in the heart of the country.
Nature plays a big role in how this place works. The Yellow River flows through the middle of the province. It enters from the northwest and passes through Luoyang. As the river flows, it picks up silt from the Loess Plateau. This silt is fine sand or clay that settles on the river bed. This can make the river bed rise and cause floods. In the past, these floods helped shape the land. Today, people use dams and levees to manage the water.
Henan has a very deep and ancient history. Some people call it a cradle of Chinese civilization. Very old sites show that cultures like the Yangshao lived here long ago. The Shang dynasty also left its mark here. You can see their early writing on oracle bones.
Today, Henan is a very busy and important place. It is the most populous province in inland China. In 2020, more than 99 million people lived there. This makes it the seventh-most populous area in the entire world. The economy is also very strong and large. In 2021, its economy was larger than the economy of Turkey. The province has many big cities like Zhengzhou and Luoyang. It also has more than 150 colleges for higher education.
Many things you know about China connect to Henan. For example, the famous Shaolin Temple is located on Mount Song. The province is also a center for science and research. Three of its cities are among the top in the world for scientific work. Zhengzhou is ranked 58th in the world for this. Kaifeng and Xinxiang are also high on the list. This shows that Henan is a place where the past and the future meet.
Henan is a major province located in central China. It serves as a vital hub for the nation's history and economy. The province is home to four ancient Chinese capitals: Luoyang, Anyang, Kaifeng, and Zhengzhou. As of 2020, Henan had a population exceeding 99 million people. This makes it the most populous inland province in China. Globally, it is the seventh-most populous administrative division. Its economic strength is also significant on a global scale. In 2021, its nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was approximately US$926 billion. This figure surpassed the entire economy of Turkey during that same year. If Henan were an independent country, it would rank as the 18th-largest economy in the world.
The physical landscape of Henan is diverse and highly functional. The eastern portion consists of vast floodplains within the North China Plain. This region is often called the "breadbasket of China" due to its fertile soil.
Water systems play a defining role in the geography of Henan. The Yellow River flows through the central part of the province. It enters from the northwest through the Sanmenxia Reservoir. As the river travels past Luoyang, the mountainous terrain gives way to wide plains. The river carries heavy loads of silt from the Loess Plateau. This silt settles and raises the river bed over time. This process has historically caused frequent and massive floods. While dams and levees now help manage the water, the river has shaped the entire habitat. The Huai River in the south also acts as a major geographic marker. It divides the climate and cultures of northern and southern China.
Henan is often regarded as a cradle of Chinese civilization. Archaeological evidence shows that Neolithic cultures, such as the Yangshao and Longshan, lived here. The Erlitou culture is also found here and is controversially linked to the Xia dynasty.
The imperial era brought periods of great reunification and collapse. The Sui dynasty briefly reunified China with a capital in Luoyang. However, the dynasty fell after the emperor attempted to build extravagant palaces there. During the Period of Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, Kaifeng became a major political center. It served as the capital for four different dynasties. Under the Song dynasty, Kaifeng became the largest city in the world. Later, the 1911 Revolution ended the Qing dynasty. Yuan Shikai, a man from Henan, became the first president of the Republic of China in 1912.
Modern history has brought both significant challenges and rapid growth. During the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1938, the Huayuankou dam was bombed. This action caused massive flooding that resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths. In 1942, a combination of drought, locusts, and war caused a severe famine. The mid-20th century also saw major shifts in administration. In 1954, the provincial capital moved from Kaifeng to Zhengzhou due to economic importance. In 1975, the collapse of 62 dams, including the Banqiao Dam, caused a catastrophic flood. This event is considered the deadliest dam-related disaster in human history, with death estimates reaching as high as 230,000.
Today, Henan is a leader in education and scientific research. The province hosts more than 150 institutions of higher education.
