The geography of Jiamusi is defined by its unique river systems. In the east, three major rivers meet: the Amur, the Songhua, and the Ussuri. The meeting of these three large rivers created the Sanjiang Plain. This plain formed through alluvion, which is the deposit of sand and silt by flowing water. Most of the terrain in the prefecture consists of flat plains. The average elevation is 156 meters. This flat landscape makes the area suitable for various types of development and agriculture.

The climate in Jiamusi is classified as a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate. This means the seasons are very distinct. The winters are long, bitter, and dry. The ground freezes to a depth of 1.5 meters. This freezing usually begins in late November and lasts until late March. In contrast, the summers are humid and very warm. Most of the annual precipitation occurs between June and August. Extreme temperatures in the region have been recorded as low as -41.1 °C and as high as 38.1 °C.

Jiamusi has a complex history that began with the Nanai people. In 1720, during the Kangxi period, they named the area Giyamusi. In the Manchu language, this word means "inn." For a long time, the land was not used for farming due to the short growing season. In 1888, it became a trading post called Dongxing. As settlers moved in, it became the seat of Huachuan county in 1910. However, destructive floods forced the county seat to move 30 miles north to Haoli. During the Japanese occupation, the city was known as Kiamusze. It served as a major military base and the capital of a district. After 1949, the city continued to develop rapidly as a center for communications.

Today, the economy of Jiamusi is built on several important sectors. It is a major agricultural production hub in Heilongjiang. In 2011, the value-added output from agriculture was RMB 18.92 billion. The city also has a strong industrial base. It produces manufacturing equipment, mining machinery, fertilizers, plastics, and chemicals. A large paper mill was built in 1957. Because of this, Jiamusi is a major producer of wood pulp and newsprint. Heavy industry and light industry together make up 64% and 36% of the city's total gross industrial output. In 2018, the city's GDP was RMB 101.2 billion.

Transportation is a key part of why Jiamusi is so important. It is a major transit port and a distribution center for goods. The Jiamusi Port was first built in 1919 and expanded in 1937. By 2014, the annual throughput of the port reached about 1 million tons. The city is also a railway hub where the Suijia and Tujia railways meet. Passenger trains connect Jiamusi to cities like Beijing, Dalian, and Harbin. A new intercity railway opened in 2018. This line reduced the travel time to Harbin from six hours to just two and a half hours. Additionally, the Jiamusi Dongjiao Airport provides flights to places like Seoul and Khabarovsk.

Jiamusi is a diverse city with a large and changing population. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,156,555 people. By the end of 2024, the registered population was 2.213 million. The urbanization rate is 51.7%, with 1.145 million people living in urban areas. The city is also connected to the world through many twin towns. These include Komsomolsk-on-Amur in Russia and Nirasaki in Japan. The city also hosts Jiamusi University and the Jiamusi Stadium, which can hold 13,000 people. These connections show how Jiamusi links local life to global systems.
