geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Northeast China is a large and important part of the country. It is made of three official provinces: Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang. This region sits near many natural borders. To the north and east, the Amur, Argun, and Ussuri rivers separate it from the Russian Far East. To the south, the Yalu and Tumen rivers mark the border with North Korea. In the west, the Greater Khingan Range and Yan Mountains sit between it and North China. The area also meets the Bohai Bay and the Yellow Sea to the southwest.

The land here is very special for growing food. The Northeast China Plain is the largest plain in the whole country. It has very rich, black soil that is great for farming. Because of this, the region is a major breadbasket for China. In 2020, it produced over 20% of the country's staple food. Farmers grow many things like maize, millet, soybeans, flax, wheat, and barley. In the warmer southern parts, people also raise many pigs and sheep.

History has shaped this land in many different ways. Many ethnic groups lived here long ago, such as the Manchus and the Koreans. During the Qing dynasty, the area was sometimes called Guandong. Later, the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan both had influence here. Japan built the South Manchurian Railway in 1906 to reach Port Arthur. After the Russo-Japanese War, the region saw many changes in who ruled it. Eventually, the area became a base for the People's Liberation Army during the Chinese Civil War.

Today, many people live in large, busy cities. There are about 107,400,000 people living in the Northeast. Most people are Han Chinese, but there are many other groups too. You can find Mongols, Koreans, and many smaller ethnic groups like the Evenks. Major cities include Shenyang, Harbin, Dalian, Changchun, and Anshan. Some of these cities have millions of people living in them. Harbin is especially famous for having many Russian influences, such as Orthodox churches.

The region is also known for its heavy industry. It was one of the first places in China to build big factories. It earned the nickname "the Republic's eldest son" because it was so important for the economy. The area focuses on making things like steel, cars, and aircraft. However, some parts of the industry have shrunk over time. This has led some people to call the region China's "Rust Belt." To help, the government started a plan in 2003 to revitalize the area.
