It sits at the very southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula. This area is surrounded by water on many sides. To the southeast is the Yellow Sea, and to the east is the Korea Bay. The Bohai Sea lies to the west of the peninsula. Looking across the Bohai Gulf, the city of Beijing is almost directly west-northwest. The district is known for its natural harbor, which is a very well-sheltered place for ships.

The natural harbor makes this place very important for ships and trade. Because the harbor is so safe, it is easy to protect with forts. In the late 1880s, a German company called Krupp built strong fortifications there. These walls and batteries were built to guard the port. The harbor is so well-protected that it looks like a lake from above. This shape makes it a very strategic spot for a navy to stay. Because of this special shape, different countries have fought to control it for a long time.

The history of Lüshunkou is full of many different rulers and names. In 1371, the name Lüshunkou was used, meaning "port of smooth journeys." In English, many people called it Port Arthur. This name came from a British officer named William Arthur who surveyed the water in 1860. The area saw big changes during the First Sino-Japanese War in 1894. Later, the Russian Empire took control and built a railroad to connect the port to Harbin. Japan also ruled the area for a long time, calling it Ryojun.

Many battles happened here during the Russo-Japanese War from 1904 to 1905. This war started when Japan attacked the port and the Russian fleet in February 1904.

One famous event was the night attack using torpedoes. The Japanese army and navy fought hard to take the city. After a long siege, the port fell to Japan in early 1905. These battles were very important for controlling the sea routes in the Yellow Sea. The fighting changed who held power in the region for many years.

Today, Lüshunkou is a modern district with about 398,579 people living there. It is part of the larger city of Dalian. While some parts of the naval zone are off-limits to visitors, much of the area is open. You can visit the World Peace Park on the western coast to see the sights. Many big universities are also moving their campuses to this area. For example, Dalian Medical University is moving to the eastern slope of Baiying Mountain. You can even take a train ferry between Lüshun, Dalian, and Yantai. This connects the district to other parts of the coast.
