Qinhuangdao is a busy port city in northern China. It sits in the Hebei province along the coast of the Bohai Sea. This sea is the innermost part of the Yellow Sea. The city is located east of Beijing and is very close to Tianjin. It is a very important place for shipping and trade in the region.

The city has three main areas that feel very different. Beidaihe is a seaside resort where government officials go in the summer. Haigang is the harbor area and is the heart of the city. It is also home to Yanshan University. Shanhaiguan is a famous spot for tourists to visit. It features the eastern end of the Great Wall. The city also has a large wildlife park that opened in 1995.

History is tied to the name of the city. Qinhuangdao means "Qin Emperor island." Legend says the first Qin Emperor visited a scenic area nearby in 210 BC. He reportedly searched for a way to live forever on an island. A small island in the Haigang District used to exist. During the late 19th century, workers used silt to join it to the mainland.

The weather in Qinhuangdao changes with four distinct seasons. It has a monsoon climate, which means the weather follows a regular pattern. Winters are cold and dry because of winds from the northwest. In July, the average temperature is around 26 degrees Celsius. Summers are hot and humid. Most of the rain falls between June and August. The temperature can sometimes reach as high as 40 degrees Celsius in the summer.

Qinhuangdao is a major center for the economy. Its port is the largest coal shipping port in China. Many ships move coal to power plants in other parts of the country. The port can handle hundreds of millions of tons of coal each year. The city is also part of a growing economic circle near Beijing. It has many connections to other places by rail and road.
