It sits on the Leizhou Peninsula in Guangdong province. This peninsula reaches out into the South China Sea. The city is located directly opposite Haikou, which is the capital of Hainan province. A body of water called the Qiongzhou Strait sits between them. Zhanjiang is the southernmost port on the mainland coast of China. It serves as a busy center for trade and travel for southwestern China.

The city has a humid subtropical climate. This means the weather is often warm and wet. The summers are very long, hot, and humid. Most of the heavy rainfall happens between April and September. Winters are usually mild, though they can be overcast. The nearby ocean helps to keep the temperature from getting too cold. This makes the weather feel very different from places far from the sea.

Zhanjiang has a long and interesting history. During the Qin dynasty, the area was part of the Xiang Shire. Later, during the Han dynasty, Xuwen County became the main center for the peninsula. The port was one of the first stops on the Maritime Silk Road. This helped trade and the city grow very early on. In 1898, the French took control of a small area called Guangzhouwan. They built a port there called Fort Bayard. The area finally returned to China in 1946.

Today, the city is a very large and busy place. In 2023, the total population was about 7,078,400 people. The city is known for many different industries. It has large factories that make cars, ships, and electrical goods. The Port of Zhanjiang is one of China's eight major ports. It can handle over 260 million tons of goods every year. The water there is quite deep, reaching 15 to 20 meters. This allows huge ships to enter the port safely.

Life in Zhanjiang is full of unique sights and sounds. People can enjoy the Leizhou Opera, which is a special art form. This type of opera has a history of over 300 years. The city also grows many delicious tropical fruits. You can find pineapples, bananas, and papayas grown here. People also farm seafood like prawns and fish in the water. Some even grow Akoya cultured pearls. It is a place where old traditions meet modern life.
