It sits in the southernmost part of Guangdong province. This area is the third largest peninsula in all of China. To the west lies the Gulf of Tonkin. To the south is the Qiongzhou Strait. This water is 30 km wide. It separates the peninsula from Hainan Island.

The land here has a very interesting shape and feel. Much of the area is made of basalt terraces. Basalt is a dark rock formed from old volcanic activity. These rocks cover about 43% of the peninsula. The rest is made of marine terraces and flat plains. You can find many beaches and low-lying plains here. There are also some quiet, dormant volcanoes in the landscape.

These volcanoes tell a story about how the earth moves. The volcanoes come from the thinning of the earth's outer layer. This happened when the South China Sea basin was created. There are two main volcanic fields on the peninsula. One is at the northern end near Zhanjiang. The other field extends across the water into Hainan. Two specific volcanoes are named Yingfengling and Tianyang.

Many amazing animals live in the waters near the peninsula. The Leizhou Bay is a home for Chinese white dolphins. This area holds the second largest group of these dolphins in China. People created the Hepu National Sanctuary of Dugongs to protect marine life. You might also see whale sharks or minke whales nearby. In the past, huge blue whales and humpback whales lived here too. Sadly, Japanese whalers once hunted these giants in the region.

Many people call this peninsula their home. In 2015, about 5,694,245 people lived in this area. Zhanjiang is the largest city for both people and size. It is a busy port city that was once a French colony. Long ago, the cities here were very welcoming to trade. However, the 19th century was also a time of pirates. Famous pirates like Zheng Yi used this area as a base.
